Project Amirim offers first-year university students an integrated, intellectually challenging introduction to university life. Students fully participate in a learning community that is engaged in addressing issues and posing questions about the diversity of scholarship and research, while exploring new knowledge and boundaries of study in interdisciplinary fields.

The project is aimed at developing independent and creative thinking through critical research tasks guided by faculty of the Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School. Special emphasis is placed on the centrality of the State of Israel and strengthening Jewish awareness within the scope of world civilizations.

The curriculum consists of integrated yearlong courses taught by an instructional team assisted by tutors and graduate students. The project provides close contact with the faculty and extensive support from librarians, computer specialists and mentors. Project Amirim includes interdisciplinary courses, field research/service learning, living/learning communities and experiential traditional text study in Judaica (Beit Midrash). In addition to Hebrew language instruction and courses in computer literacy, students are required to take four special Amirim courses in Jewish and Israel studies, world civilizations and cultures, and community action-oriented instruction. Project Amirim students can also enroll in courses offered within the Division of Undergraduate Studies at the Rothberg International School.

Participants in Project Amirim are offered special workshops, fieldtrips and unique social and political encounters. In addition, they participate in the wide array of extracurricular activities offered by the Office of Student Activities (OSA). Project Amirim students reside together in a dormitory on the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University.

Recent high school graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and SAT I scores of at least 1300 or its equivalent are invited to submit their candidacy for this project. Students who did not previously study at a high school where the language of instruction is English need a TOEFL score of 550 or higher or the equivalent.
